Comfort Zones
We’ve all heard it before, with great risks comes great reward. But ya know what else comes with great risk? GREAT ANXIETY…..FEAR….the possibility of failure, embarrassment, and mistakes. Taking a risk in your life is uncomy, and scary. Change can scare everyone. If any of you are like me, you aren’t a fan or new things unless you are totally prepared, with absolutely no forecast of failure.
Whether you’re planning a huge move, changing your major for the 100th time, ending a bad relationship, or even starting a blog, we all have talked about it, but we haven't actually took the plunge.
We tend to get caught up on the end results. We look at the successful people surrounding us and assume they got lucky, or the prodigies of the world. We worry about working and it not paying off, we worry of how we cant do things. However, my girl Amy Pohler really broke through to me by saying in this quote: “Great people do things before they were ready..”
Some of the greats weren’t always great; it took risk, trial and error. You only grow when you step out of your comfort zone, when you embrace the change, and smile at the risk. I know going to college isn’t that big of a risk, but leaving the comfort of my previous childhood life was quite a frightening task for me. However, my time here has taught me lessons about putting myself out there, taking risks, and failure. Here are some three tips about standing outside of your comfort zone:
1.Think about what you want to accomplish and make a list of how you’re going to get there.
I love lists, and I think writing down your goals gives you a better change of reaching them! Write down realistic steps to take in order to get to where you want to be.
2. Ignore your negative thoughts and other people’s opinions
I usually talk myself in and out of something 5 times before I make a decision. This will drive you crazy. Be positive, be your own cheerleader, and find a good support system.
3. Have grit + make things happen.
Most people don't just sit around waiting for things to happen to them or for opportunities to fall into their lap. Ask questions! Talk to people! Do you think Jackie Kennedy Onnasis waited for others to tell her how to be fabulous?
Wherever you are in life, remember that taking a risk will always be terrifying. Just keep in mind that you’ll never know what you are capable of, what you could accomplish until you try! The worst thing that could happen is you fail, you learn, and you move on with another valuable lesson in your pocket. Standing outside of your comfort zone, is the first step to the life you have always wanted!
